Local Citations Matter – Scan your website for free

Joe: Welcome to the Being Found Show. We are your guide to being found by more buying customers online.

We have a marketing company called Cloud Potential. On Cloud Potentials homepage, you can find a big blue box where you can enter the name of your business and get a free SEO report to check your citations. Its a simple and fantastic tool for businesses and I recommend checking that out. Chauncey, could you explain what a citation is and why it is important for these businesses online?

A complete overview of your Local SEO performance in minutes; including Search Rankings, Local Listings, Reviews, On-Site SEO & Social Media.

Chauncey: I think a lot of people find the term citation to be confusing. It isn’t like a ticket where you get in trouble; it is more of a bibliography. A citation is like a collection of all your information. An old-school marketing term that relates is NAPs, which stands for name, address, and phone number, and stuff. Anytime your website is displayed in places like Yellow Pages; your NAPs should be present.

Your social media can be considered a citation on some level. The reason why this is important is the more it shows consistency across the web, the more Google says, “Hey, these people are not only who they say they are, but their location is important to them, their information is important to them. By making sure all this stuff is there, we believe they’re going to be there for awhile, so it’s worth serving up to our visitors.”

Joe: If I were to Google myself and my business, I would likely see Yelp listings and reviews, our Facebook page and hopefully my site. All of those places referring to my business listing, information and my business itself would be considered a citation. You’re saying for those places or citations; the more accurate they are, the more google recognizes who you are and validates your existence on their platform. This creates trust and a good valid reputation with Google leading to them serving you up more to consumers.

Chauncey: If you’re a local business, there is no showing up in the map packs without consistent citations.

Joe: One of our clients said someone else is cheating, using their name to gain traffic. We had to do citations and images and all kinds of stuff just so that they could have their real name when on the map instead of the person cheating.

Again, take a look at cloudpotential.com and utilize that SEO tool to view your citations. Not only will you be able to see what is going on, but you can also fix and improve the way you are being seen and accessed throughout the internet in one place.
